How to Read Your Backlink Status Report

You do not need to know SEO terminology. Start with the placement requirements, then use the technical checks to understand what was found. A technical observation is not automatically a problem.

01 / Inputs

Publication page and expected destination are different things

Publication page is the article you want to inspect. Expected destination is your website or the exact page the article should link to. A publication can return HTTP 200 while its backlink points somewhere else or ends on an error page, so the report shows both separately.

02 / Placement requirements

Only promises you selected affect the result

Verified

The returned page contains enough evidence to confirm this selected requirement.

Needs correction

The page was inspected successfully, but a selected requirement was not delivered.

Could not verify

The site blocked the check, timed out, needed JavaScript, or otherwise prevented a reliable answer. This does not mean the placement is missing.

Not selected

This item was not part of your agreement, so it is not included in the requirements count.

03 / Link labels

What nofollow, sponsored, UGC, noopener, and noreferrer mean

nofollow

The publisher tells search engines not to treat the link as a normal editorial endorsement. Visitors can still click it. It does not mean the placement is missing.

sponsored

The publisher identifies the link as paid, sponsored, gifted, or otherwise connected to an exchange of value.

ugc

The publisher identifies the link as user-generated content, such as a forum post or public comment.

noopener

Keeps the original page safer when the link opens a new tab. It is a browser-safety instruction and does not make the link nofollow.

noreferrer

Stops the destination from receiving the address of the page that sent the visit. It is a privacy instruction and does not make the link nofollow.

No SEO qualification detected

No nofollow, sponsored, or ugc label was detected. People often call this a followed link, but dofollow is not an HTML attribute.

04 / Technical checks

Useful context that does not change the promise by itself

HTTP status and redirects

HTTP 200 usually means the requested page responded successfully. A 301 or 302 sends the visitor to another address. The receipt preserves the link exactly as published and separately shows where its redirects finish. A final 404 or 500 means the destination returned an error.

Indexability signals and noindex

noindex asks supported search engines not to include the page in search results. If no blocking signal is detected, that still does not prove Google indexed the page. MentionProof reports only the signals it could inspect.

Canonical URL

A canonical tells search engines which URL the publisher considers the main version. A canonical pointing elsewhere can cause signals to be consolidated to another page, but it does not automatically mean your mention or link is broken.

JavaScript or access uncertainty

Some websites return an empty shell and build the visible article with JavaScript, while others block automated requests. In either case the correct result is "could not verify," not "not found." Open the article manually before contacting the publisher.

05 / Publisher context

Domain Rating is context, not a placement grade

Domain Rating is an Ahrefs metric describing the relative strength of a website's backlink profile. It does not prove that this article is indexed, gets traffic, ranks, or will help your rankings. MentionProof never adds DR to the requirement count and still completes the placement check when DR is unavailable.

06 / Limits

What this checker cannot prove

It cannot discover every backlink to your website.
It cannot prove that Google indexed the publication.
It cannot predict rankings, traffic, referrals, or commercial value.
It does not render every JavaScript-only or authenticated page.
It checks the page at one moment; a publisher can change it later.

Use the receipt as evidence of what the checker could inspect at the shown time, not as an SEO guarantee.
